Hi lomo-folk!

I recently took my first few rolls of Holga film in for processing, but they wanted $14.95 a roll to scan and place them on CD.

I'm wondering, is there a decent scanner out there that will accept 120 film and not cost me an arm and a leg?

Thanks for any input you may have, photos coming soon!

When the spirit of god decended upon Avignon it did not stop at the musical institute across the way [13 May 2008|09:28am]

It's fucking fabulous to have a human being who will sit with me until 2am just listening to and sharing music and watching silly Woody Allen movies and discussing why things are the way they are and being as completely ubsurd as is humanly possible. As lame as this sounds, it's nice to remember what it's like to have a friend.

I've been a pretty solitary person the last few months, forgetting how to communicate with anyone and being anti-social. Now-- ever free moment I have seems to mean Dana will be over, burning music to my computer and discussing literature with me. Which is sincerely what i've been craving for so fucking long. Someone who actively pursues knowledge and tried her god damn hardest to shove it down my throat.

Give and take. Conversation. Fun.

I've missed this.

In other news, I've been nauseus for three days and have eaten three meals in three days. I'm hungry, i really am, but every time I put something in my tummy, I wanna puke it up. Is it a still present hangover? God I doubt it.

If I wasn't feeling sick, I'd be content.

I think I just need a solid 12 hour period by myself. A hyper-clean of the apartment, reading some, listening to music, possibly doing an art piece or writing something. God I have this idea that I want to get out onto paper so bad... Just finding the time is impossible. I really, sincerely used to be a good writer, i really did. But this informal diary format and laziness has made me sloppy and useless.

Oh well. Off to another day of work and freaking out about not having an apartment. (viewing more tomorrow night... we looked at a shit-hole last night... eeeeh. awful)

Old School Mix: When It Was Still Called Rap [13 May 2008|01:14am]

[juliandrago]
As I mentioned in my submission for the game (below), I DJ'd an old school rap party this weekend. And, as promised to [info]goethe_re_scape--who uploaded an awesome rap mix in his journal that you should all check out--I'm sharing the wealth.  I spun for over 6 hours, so this is about half of the material that went up (the rest was vinyl and I don't have time to rip it all).  For the most part I've left out the more obvious classics.  This isn't meant to be comprehensive, just a collection of jams that rock the party, and I figured you guys would appreciate the more non-obvious stuff.

Two parts, about 150 mb each.  Lace up those pumas and start bustin' on that lino.

When It Was Still Called Rap Pt. 1
When It Was Still Called Rap Pt. 2

Tracklist in alphabetical order (since I just picked from these as I saw fit over the course of the night):
Part 1:
5 star moet - you can't break b-boys

big daddy kane - smooth operator
brother d and the collective effort - how we gonna make the black nation rise
busy boys - classical
dj m.a.t.e. and the latin mc's - let's jam
disco dream - the mean machine
dr. jeckyll & mr. hyde - fast life
eye beta rock - super rock body shock
fearless four - just rock
furious five ft. cowboy, melle mel, & scorpio - step off
grandmaster flash & the furious five - the birthday party
grandmaster flash & the furious five - the message
harlem world crew ft. dr. jeckyll & mr. hyde - rapper's convention pt.1 and 2
j.v.c. f.o.r.c.e. - nu skool
j.v.c. f.o.r.c.e. - doin damage
just four - games of life
kool moe dee - wild wild west
Part 2:
lady b - to the beat, y'all
lil' jazzy jay & cool supreme - b boys style
masterdon committee - funkbox party
point blank mc's - what the party need
robe base & e-z rock - it takes two
ron hunt - spider
sean baby & ninja d ft. mr. mister k.g. - k.g. dance

About 3 1/2 hrs of music.  About 3-4 tracks courtesy of [info]goethe_re_scape's mix.

Don Armando's 2nd Avenue Rhumba Band - I'm an Indian Too

http://www.divshare.com/download/4480873-780

It's sort of un-pc, but frankly, I don't care: coming out of a cultural milieu where cher's "half breed" approaches singles charts, and the village people's philippe is an utter charicature, Don Armando's "I'm An Indian Too" fits right it. It's hilarious, energetic, and awesome.

My second choice was Nico's Purple Lips off of her last (strong) studio album, Drama of Exile:

I recently kicked off what will hopefully be a fruitful career in DJing this past Saturday as the DJ for my house's old school "hip-hop" party (aka RAP). In preparing for this, I did a good amount of crate digging and mp3 blog searching alike. In addition to rekindling my love for rap from back in tha day, I found a lot of dope jams. This is my personal favorite, which conveniently came to me in mp3 format.

Ron Hunt is known for the similarly titled and perhaps more classic Spiderap, but that song doesn't really hold a candle to this blend of sexy electro, Rn'B, funk, and rap. What's amazing to me about this song is that it bridges two pretty disparate realms: on the one hand, it's got a solid bass groove that gets the party stompin' (and believe me, it did), but it's also layered with a thick, plaintive melody that really starts to tug at my heart strings. Don't ask why. That combination of synth and bass makes me want to tear up AND move my feet at the same time. Somehow, it works, and really damn well.

Arcade Fire apparently set to do soundtrack... [12 May 2008|09:05pm]

Arcade Fire are apparently set to do the soundtrack for the upcoming Richard Kelly film The Box. (director of Donnie Darko and Southland Tales). Note: This is NOT the sequel to Donnie Darko nor does it have anything to do with it.

NINJAS! [12 May 2008|09:39pm]

giantlemondrop
so my friend andrew calls this afternoon and asks...

andrew: do you want to dress like a ninja, make grunting noises and be on tv?
me: yes

i love this kind of shit...the more random and bizarre the better. fortunately my friends are the exact same way. i sent the following text to my friend marcus to ask if he wanted to be involved too...

me: do you want to be a grunting ninja on tv this thursday at 6pm?
marcus: sure. who is this?

only moments earlier, my friend cari comes into the dining room and says, "guess what?! i just bought two kayaks!"...knowing that dallas is completely landlocked and the only rivers we have are probably havens for new and exciting forms of ebola makes this all the more badass.

andrea is playing the accordion right now so that daisy will start howling.

awesome.

ps. i'm building a trolley

Holga vs Diana [12 May 2008|05:52pm]

lomography

[burlymanvagina]
Hi everybody.  I've been debating whether or not I also want to buy a Diana.  Does anyone use both a Holga and Diana, and if so, which one do you like better?  I know the basic differences between the two, but have you found that the differences are drastic?  Does the Diana have less light leakage?

Do I ask too many questions?:)

Hopefully my next post will actually have pictures in it, but that will be in like 4 weeks since it takes so long.
